The Spider and the Fly Problem

The apparently obvious answer is that the spider should take what appears to be the straightest route, moving 1 foot up the wall, 30 feet across the ceiling and then 11 feet down the opposite wall; a total distance of 42 feet. However, this is not the shortest route.
