The Rope Puzzle

rope

Find two lengths of rope or string and a willing partner. Tie each end of one rope around each of your wrists and then tie the other rope around your partner's wrists so that you are connected as in the diagram above.

Can you separate yourselves without untying the ropes?

CONTINUE

It is possible.

SOLUTION

I regret to inform you that no amount of rolling around on the floor with your partner, climbing in and out of each other's ropes will succeed.

The solution is remarkably straightforward: take a loop near the middle of your own rope and pass it under the loop around your partner's wrist (on the inside of the wrist and in the direction from elbow to hand) and then slip it over your partner's hand. Now pass it again under the loop around your partner's wrist, but this time in the direction from hand to elbow.

Et voila - you should now be separated.
