Box Illusion

Notes on viewing Paraboxes

Oscar Wilde suggested that talking about art is like dancing about architecture. But what did he know? And is this art anyway?

"Floating" up and down the screen is the basic template from which all the box designs on this site have evolved. The idea was conceived whilst reading a book about paradoxes by Martin Gardner - Aha! Gotcha : Paradoxes to Puzzle and Delight.
This book is highly recommended to anyone who has enjoyed this site.

How many ways are there of interpreting the image above?

CONTINUE

There are at least four ways of interpreting the image.

Here are three ways of interpreting the image in 3D:

1) A small box in a corner.
2) A large box with a small box shape missing from the near corner.
3) A large box with a small box stuck on the near corner - often the hardest to see.

It can also be seen simply as an abstract image, or as a flat image in 3 dimensional space.

Simply rotating the image or viewing its mirror image can trick the mind in to interpreting the image in different ways (see Gallery 2).

In some of Rob's Paraboxes darker areas have also been added. These could be interpreted as shadows. These "shadows" should enable the viewer to interpret the images in still further ways. This Page enables you to compare the paraboxes with and without the "shadows" by moving your mouse over the image.

The images may be seen to have an allegorical nature (see STRANGER AND STRANGER).
